"Item-Level Tagging: Moving Beyond the Frequency Dilemma", a report from Health Industry Insights
Apr 01, 2007 |
|
"RFID adoption in the pharmaceutical industry has been slower than expected. Many factors have contributed to this, including technical limitations, lacking regulatory incentives, and public security and privacy concerns. However, research results indicate the top 2 roadblocks inhibiting widespread adoption of RFID are a lack of proven return on investment (ROI) and the ongoing debate between competing item-level frequencies. While 915MHz UHF tags are the de facto choice for case and pallet level tagging, the unit level standard is still up for debate. As a result, many companies have abstained from the RFID movement, both for fear of investing in the wrong infrastructure and in anticipation of further ROI data being released from industry pilots to help companies establish a quantifiable business case to justify the investment. This unfortunate reality is slowing the adoption of increased drug security for consumers and keeping pharmaceutical companies from realizing a multitude of other network-effect benefits that will come from large-scale RFID adoption, including improvements in supply chain efficiency, drug recalls, chargebacks, and product returns. For these reasons, Health Industry Insights believes that RFID vendors will soon decide to shake hands, move past the frequency impasse, and begin helping pharmaceutical companies move forward with the adoption of frequency independent universal platforms and infrastructure."
